Sony Dcr-trv22 User Manual

Dcr

Sony's 2003 DCR-TRV22 miniDV (NTSC model) Handycam camcorder is obviously not a new camcorder, and does not produce HD quality video but among SD camcorders of it's time arguably one of the better ones for the amateur filmmaker. And I say this because there are many things to like about it.Pros:a sturdy and compact design, responsive LCD, several in/out terminals including mic, headset, miniUSB, iLink, S-video jack, good handstrap, supports lens conversions/filters, nightshot/low lux, carl zeiss and vario sonnar, memory stick compatible, steady shot, auto and manual focus, convenient viewfinder, can upgrade battery and more. The lens cap can be flipped open and closed or removed completely for quick capture or protecting your lens. Video quality is above average for it's class of camcorder with few artifacts and blurred areas and can be adjusted with the appropriate control settings. Camcorder comes with an accesory shoe for external mic or light located on the top right. The battery info button on the left side of the unit can display the battery power and record time left on the LCD screen which is very convenient. The LCD layout, while dated, is relatively easy to use though at time can seem to be in the way of the picture. The viewfinder displays objects in colour and can be pulled up for better viewing.Cons: miniDV inserts at the bottom, lack of noise filter, low humming noise in tape mechanism, auto-focus can be slow at times when refocussing, LCD can be hard to see in outdoor use.Unfortunately, having the miniDV open at the bottom of the unit means it must be removed from a tripod to change tapes, if attached to a tripod. Some units will have a typical low humming noise which can be heard from the unit when completely silent though this is not a major issue in most cases. The LCD is easily viewable indoors but outdoor glare can make it hard to view. The viewfinder obviously does not display as well as the LCD, not as crisp and colour can appear slightly off, but gets the job done.Overall:I have used this camera first hand but did not purchase one until years after it's initial release. While camcorders today are usually praised for their sharp picture and HD quality, I have seen many features typical of entry-level camcorders being dropped over the years. That said, despite it's age the DCR-TRV22 when compared to entry-level standard definition camcorders today, fairs quite well with many features that are now hard to find in entry-level camcorders; the viewfinder, accesory shoe, mic input, nightshot etc. Spectrasonics omnisphere 2 free trial. If you are concerned about video quality and want a high-end or HD camcorder then this is not the camcorder for you. But if you are looking for a decent standard definition camcorder with many of yesterday's bells and whistles which are still desireable today, then you may want to consider a used DCR-TRV22 or 22E (PAL version). I did not include the specs since they can easily be found online or by viewing the user manual but if you are serious about getting one of these cameras, lookup the specs and compare to other cameras. Just make sure the camera is in good operating+physical condition. The choice is yours, but I would go with these cameras over a low-end camcorder or those HD flip-phones anyday. If you're an amateur filmmaker working on a budget, I think you'll find a lot to like about the DCR-TRV22, DCR-TRVs, and Sony Handycams in general.Read full review
